The Evolution Of The Navigation System
Augmented Reality (AR) Navigation
Hyundai Motor Group introduced the world’s first ‘AR Navigation’ at CES 2019. In addition to the basic navigation features, ADAS features – such as Lane Departure Assist and Forward Collision Assist – are implemented to allow the driver to focus on the front. The advantage of the AR navigation system is that the stereoscopic image of the actual road is displayed on the windshield of the automobile and appropriately adjusted in accordance with the specific viewing angle of the driver, thereby delivering accurate driving guidance.
In addition, the AR navigation plans to gradually expand the area that can be displayed for people and objects, buses or bicycle lanes, and crossings. Face Connect is an interactive technology to recognize the face of the registered driver and provide a customized driving environment. Upon recognizing the driver’s face, the system locks or unlocks the door, while determining who the user is and recalling the driver’s preset settings such as the position of the driver’s seat, steering wheel, head-up display (HUD), side mirrors and infotainment environment. A near-infrared (NIR) camera allows face recognition in dark conditions such as cloudy days and nighttime at the level equivalent to daytime performance. Deep learning-based image recognition technology is used to clearly determine whether a face matches a registered one. The registered face information is encrypted and stored securely inside the vehicle, creating no risk of a data breach, and can be deleted at any time if the driver wishes. Face Connect is attracting attention as a technology that will usher in an era of operating your car using biometric information, without the need for a key.

Fingerprint Authentication System
The fingerprint authentication system offers two primary benefits. The first benefit is the convenience of only needing a fingerprint authentication system to use your car, including locking and unlocking it, starting the engine and driving, all without a physical key. The second benefit is that you can easily use the infotainment system features, such as user profile selection, Carpay payment approval and valet mode disabling, with a single fingerprint authentication. Hyundai Motor Group’s fingerprint authentication system is based on capacitance measurement. This method involves measuring and comparing the amount of electric charge in the fingerprint ridges and valleys and has a higher level of completeness compared to optical and ultrasonic methods. In addition, every time a fingerprint is successfully authenticated, the existing fingerprint data is updated with the new fingerprint data. The probability that an unregistered fingerprint is mistaken for a registered one is 0.002%, allowing a high level of security. Our fingerprint authentication system is expected to make a significant contribution to the evolution of human-car interactions in the future.
